the fact that people today say that pre-83 ARs are 'the best' is a testament to the general high quality workmanship in guitar manufacture from the late '70s and onwards. Early Ibanez AR models were produced at different shops, one batch might come out of the Terada plant, the next from Iida gakki. This happened a lot all across the business. Involving several OEM producers and subcontractors was not unique for Fender. While Fujigen was main producer of Fender Japan guitars from JV serials until mid/late '90s, other factories too were involved during this period. Who made these N 5-digit serials I don't know. The only break with chronology is a short lived reappearance of an N followed by 5 digits (as opposed to 6) in 1995-6, which marked a transition period as Fender moved from Fujigen gakki to Tokai and Dyna gakki. Click to expand.Nah, it's pretty well established that A-serial was mid '80s, starting a consecutive line of "Made in Japan" serials going through the alphabet throughout the '80s and '90s reaching, skipping E (already taken) and D and R (not explained), reaching V in 1996-7.
